Northern Cyprus: 10 reasons to go now

Want to go to a place where you can take a stroll with some shepherds, scramble about soaring castles, fill up on a 'full kebab' and walk 'the line'? Then take a look at my story Northern Cyprus: 10 Reasons to Go Now which has just gone up on the Nine MSN Travel site to see why I think you need to go soon. The 'line' you'll walk, by the way, is 'the Green Line', the UN-buffer zone that currently separates the North and South of Cyprus. The fact that talks are currently underway between the leaders of both sides to pull down the borders and unite the country is the main reason I think you should visit soon. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for unification. But if you haven't seen Northern Cyprus the way it is now, you should, before it's too late. It will become a very different place once the country is united, for better and possibly - but I hope not - for worse.

Pictured? Another good reason to go - the Turkish Delight, or lokum. Yum!

Well, a lot of my friends here are from Cyprus. I need to butter them up so I can come visit this winter break - Or is that too late? Say it isnt so!

Things don't seem to be moving in Cyprus as fast as some people expected they might, but the sooner you get there the better, I think. Because it will change - for the better no doubt - but I think it's worth seeing now, to appreciate how the people there have lived - divided - for so long.

Winter is just lovely there! Gorgeous blue skies! And the clearest light.

It's a great place to check out if you're carrying dollars. Cheaper than the south and can be made into a combo trip - with boat ride - to and from the Turkish coast.

Hi Anil

It's a great place to visit if you're in the south of Turkey, you're right - especially Antalya for instance,

But I was disappointed on this last trip to find that it wasn't as cheap as the South in many respects. Tickets to archaeological sites are outrageously high, for instance, even higher than they are at some of Italy's best sites.

Regardless, I think they're worth visiting. Historically, it was such an important country too, on the crossroads between east and west. Fascinating stuff!

Thanks for commenting!
